How NHS Wales bank-holiday pay is calculated

Working on an NHS bank holiday does not always mean that every person receives the same hourly payment. For Agenda for Change staff in Wales, the result depends on the employee’s pay band, basic hourly rate, whether the hours form part of the normal working week, and whether the work has been authorised as overtime. The calendar boundary also matters because the public-holiday rate ordinarily applies from midnight to midnight on the recognised public holiday.

This NHS Wales bank holiday pay calculator takes those key details and estimates gross shift pay. It identifies each paid minute falling on the selected public holiday, removes an unpaid break from the correct part of the shift, and separates any adjoining weekday-night or weekend hours. This is especially useful for night shifts that begin on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or the evening of a substitute bank holiday.

The tool is intended for employees paid under NHS Wales Agenda for Change. It does not calculate medical and dental contracts, agency rates, staff-bank offers with a separately advertised rate, on-call availability payments or local agreements that replace standard handbook arrangements.

NHS Wales public-holiday enhancement rates

For rostered or standard hours, Sundays and recognised public holidays use the higher Section 2 enhancement column. The enhancement is added to ordinary basic pay. A Band 5 employee receiving “time plus 60%,” for example, receives basic pay for the hour plus an additional amount equal to 60% of the basic hourly rate.

Pay bandPublic-holiday enhancementTotal rate including basic pay
Band 194% extra194% of basic hourly pay
Band 283% extra183% of basic hourly pay
Band 369% extra169% of basic hourly pay
Bands 4–960% extra160% of basic hourly pay

Only one unsocial-hours rate is applied to each hour. A Sunday that is also a public holiday does not normally produce a Sunday percentage plus a separate public-holiday percentage. The calculator uses the single applicable public-holiday rate.

Official bank holidays used by the calculator

The calculator includes the England-and-Wales public holidays relevant around the 2026/27 NHS pay year. Dates are based on the official GOV.UK list. A substitute day is important: in 2026 Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December, but the recognised bank holiday is Monday 28 December. The calculator therefore treats 28 December as the selected public holiday rather than automatically treating the Saturday as an additional public holiday.

How to use the bank-holiday shift calculator

Choose the Agenda for Change band and pay point shown on your contract, ESR record or payslip. Select the recognised holiday being worked. If the shift begins during that holiday, leave the start-day option on “On the selected bank holiday.” If the night shift begins on the previous evening and enters the holiday at midnight, choose “On the previous calendar day.”

Enter the start and finish times. When the finish time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as the next day. Add the start time and length of any unpaid break. This ensures, for example, that a 45-minute break after midnight on Christmas Day is removed from the Christmas bank-holiday hours rather than from the Christmas Eve portion.

Finally, identify whether the shift is part of rostered or standard hours, or approved overtime above 37.5 hours. Do not select overtime merely because the shift is inconvenient, offered at short notice or additional to a part-time contract. The handbook treatment depends on whether full-time standard weekly hours have been exceeded and whether overtime has been agreed.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day NHS pay examples

Imagine a Band 5 nurse working from 7pm on Christmas Eve until 7am on Christmas Day, with a 45-minute unpaid break at 1am. The period from 7pm to midnight is not Christmas Day. Some of those hours may qualify for the weekday-night rate after 8pm, while paid hours from midnight until 7am fall on the public holiday and attract the Band 5 public-holiday enhancement. The calculator displays those two additions separately.

A shift beginning at 7pm on Christmas Day and ending at 7am on 26 December is different. Christmas Day hours stop at midnight. Hours after midnight fall on Saturday 26 December 2026, which attracts the Saturday rate under the standard table, while the Boxing Day substitute public holiday occurs on Monday 28 December. This distinction prevents an entire cross-midnight shift being incorrectly treated as public-holiday time.

If a person works on Monday 28 December 2026, the selected Boxing Day substitute date is treated as a public holiday from midnight to midnight. The name of the holiday does not move the enhancement back to Saturday when the official substitute day is Monday.

Standard hours versus NHS bank-holiday overtime

Section 2 unsocial-hours enhancements generally apply where work forms part of standard hours within the normal 37.5-hour week. Approved overtime is dealt with separately. Under the standard handbook wording, staff in Bands 1–7 are eligible for overtime at time-and-a-half, except work on general public holidays, which is paid at double time. Bands 8 and 9 are not ordinarily eligible for these overtime payments.

When “approved overtime” is selected, this calculator estimates a 100% addition to basic pay for minutes on the public holiday, producing double time. Other overtime minutes in the shift receive a 50% addition, producing time-and-a-half. If Band 8 or 9 is selected with overtime, the result warns that the standard overtime provision does not apply and payroll confirmation is required.

A part-time employee who works additional hours does not necessarily become eligible for overtime immediately. Additional hours are generally paid at plain-time rates until total weekly hours exceed 37.5, although unsocial-hours enhancements can still depend on when rostered work occurs. Confirm the classification with the manager approving the work.

How the hourly rate is estimated

The calculator converts the selected 2026/27 NHS Wales annual salary into an estimated hourly rate using a 37.5-hour week and 52.1429 weeks a year. It then calculates basic pay for every paid minute in the shift. Payroll may use centrally supplied hourly figures and retain additional decimal places, so small rounding differences are possible.

The enhancement calculation normally uses basic salary and may include an eligible long-term recruitment and retention premium. Short-term premiums and other supplements are generally excluded. This calculator uses basic salary alone and does not attempt to add local allowances or premia.

Bank-holiday pay and time off in lieu

Pay and leave entitlement are related but separate questions. Agenda for Change staff have public-holiday entitlement, and part-time entitlement is normally calculated pro rata. Whether someone working a particular holiday receives another day or hours of leave depends on contracted hours, roster arrangements and the employer’s leave-recording process. The calculator estimates shift pay only; it does not calculate annual leave or time off in lieu.

Do not assume that receiving enhanced pay automatically removes leave entitlement, or that leave entitlement automatically guarantees an enhancement for hours not worked. Check the local roster and annual-leave policy where a public holiday falls on a normal working or non-working day.

Why actual NHS bank-holiday pay may differ

Payroll can differ because of a recorded break, a local prospective-payment arrangement, a separate bank-shift rate, overtime authorisation, a long-term premium, payroll rounding or a correction processed after the cut-off date. Shifts crossing midnight are particularly easy to misunderstand because only the minutes within the recognised calendar date receive the public-holiday classification.

The result shown here is gross pay. Income Tax, National Insurance, NHS pension contributions and student-loan deductions can reduce the amount reaching the bank account. The deductions depend on total earnings in the pay period rather than on this shift alone.

Use the calculator as a checking and planning tool. Your contract, the current NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Handbook, Welsh amendments and your employer’s payroll decision remain authoritative.

Frequently asked questions

Is NHS Wales bank-holiday work always double time?

No. Standard rostered public-holiday hours use band-specific Section 2 enhancements: 94%, 83%, 69% or 60% extra depending on band. Approved overtime above 37.5 hours for eligible Bands 1–7 is treated separately and may be paid at double time.

What is Band 5 bank-holiday pay in NHS Wales?

For standard hours, Bands 4–9 receive time plus 60% for recognised public-holiday hours. The exact pound amount depends on the Band 5 pay point and paid hours.

Is Boxing Day 2026 paid on Saturday or Monday?

The official substitute bank holiday is Monday 28 December 2026. Saturday 26 December remains a Saturday for the standard unsocial-hours calculation unless a separate local arrangement applies.

Does the whole night shift receive bank-holiday pay?

Not automatically. Public-holiday rates apply from midnight to midnight on the recognised date. A night shift crossing the boundary is divided into the appropriate periods.

Does an unpaid break attract the enhancement?

An unpaid break is not paid. Enter its timing so it is removed from the correct calendar-day section of the shift.

Can doctors use this calculator?

No. Doctors and dentists have separate contractual arrangements. This tool is for eligible NHS Wales Agenda for Change staff.

Does this show bank-holiday take-home pay?

No. It estimates gross shift pay before tax, National Insurance, pension and student-loan deductions.
