How this NHS part-time salary calculator works

Part-time NHS pay is usually described as a pro-rata share of the full-time salary. For Agenda for Change staff, a standard full-time week is normally 37.5 hours. This calculator divides your contracted weekly hours by 37.5 to find your whole-time equivalent, often written as WTE. It then multiplies the published full-time salary for your NHS Wales band and pay point by that percentage.

For example, 30 hours divided by 37.5 equals 0.8 WTE. A member of staff working 30 hours therefore receives 80% of the relevant full-time basic salary before deductions and additional payments. Someone working 22.5 hours is 0.6 WTE, while 18.75 hours is exactly 0.5 WTE. The result section displays the WTE percentage so you can check the calculation immediately.

The tool then estimates Income Tax, employee National Insurance, NHS pension contributions and any selected student-loan repayments. This turns a simple NHS pro-rata salary calculation into a more useful estimate of monthly take-home pay. It also shows the selected full-time salary, pro-rata annual basic salary, gross monthly pay and approximate basic hourly rate.

How to calculate NHS salary for 30, 22.5 or 18.75 hours

Select your Agenda for Change band first, followed by the pay point shown on your contract or Electronic Staff Record. Enter your contracted weekly hours rather than the hours you happen to work in a busy week. If you regularly receive a predictable amount for nights, weekends or overtime, you can enter a monthly average in the additional-pay box.

Leave the pension option selected if you are an active member of the NHS Pension Scheme. Choose the student-loan plan used by payroll and add a Postgraduate Loan if applicable. When you press the button, the calculator annualises regular earnings and displays an estimated average month. A month containing arrears, a one-off bank shift or unusually high enhancements is unlikely to match this average exactly.

Useful distinction: this page is designed specifically for reduced-hours and pro-rata calculations. For a broader full-time calculation, visit the main NHS Wales salary calculator.

Quick NHS pro-rata pay examples

The following percentages apply to any Agenda for Change band because they are based on hours, not salary. Multiply the appropriate full-time salary by the WTE percentage to find pro-rata basic pay. The interactive calculator above performs this step and then estimates deductions.

NHS Wales Agenda for Change pay in 2026/27

The calculator uses the Agenda for Change salaries in the NHS Wales pay circular effective from 1 April 2026, including the 3.3% pay award. Bands 2 to 4 have fewer published pay points than Bands 5 to 9. Your correct point is important: two employees in the same band can have different full-time salaries and therefore different pro-rata and take-home pay.

Pay progression should not be assumed simply from the number of years you have worked. Check your contract, ESR record or payslip and follow the applicable NHS Wales progression arrangements. The calculator covers Agenda for Change roles; it does not cover doctors, dentists, very senior managers or staff employed on local terms.

Part-time NHS pension contributions

NHS pension employee contributions are based on pensionable earnings and contribution tiers. For this estimate, the applicable 2026/27 percentage is selected using actual pro-rata annual pensionable pay, not the full-time equivalent salary. That matters because reducing weekly hours can place actual earnings in a different contribution tier.

The selected contribution rate applies to all pensionable basic pay rather than progressively to slices of income. Pension contributions generally receive Income Tax relief through payroll, so the calculator reduces taxable employment income by the estimated contribution. National Insurance and student-loan deductions use the relevant gross earnings instead.

Optional additional monthly pay is treated here as taxable and non-pensionable. In reality, whether an enhancement is pensionable depends on the payment and payroll rules. If you are comparing a proposed reduction in hours, use ordinary basic pay first and treat variable enhancements separately.

Tax, National Insurance and student loans

The 2026/27 estimate uses the standard £12,570 Personal Allowance and the 20%, 40% and 45% Income Tax rates that apply to non-savings employment income for a standard Welsh taxpayer. The allowance is tapered when adjusted net income exceeds £100,000. A different tax code, Marriage Allowance, taxable benefits or income from another job can produce a different result.

Employee National Insurance is modelled at the standard category A rates: 8% between the primary threshold and upper earnings limit, then 2% above it. Student-loan deductions use the selected 2026/27 plan threshold, with repayments at 9% above that threshold. A Postgraduate Loan is calculated separately at 6% above its threshold. Payroll applies deductions by pay period and uses specific rounding rules, so this annualised planning tool will not reproduce every payslip to the penny.

Does working part time change the hourly rate?

Ordinarily, reducing contractual hours does not reduce the basic hourly value of the selected Agenda for Change salary. The annual basic salary falls because fewer hours are worked, but the underlying hourly basic rate remains broadly the same. The calculator derives an illustrative hourly rate by dividing the full-time annual salary by 37.5 hours and 52.1429 weeks.

Take-home pay does not always fall in perfect proportion to hours. Income Tax, National Insurance, pension tiers and student-loan thresholds interact with earnings. Moving from 37.5 to 30 hours might reduce gross basic salary to 80%, but net pay may remain slightly more than 80% of the previous net amount because less income is exposed to deductions. Individual circumstances still matter.

What the estimate does not include

The calculation cannot know your exact tax code, earlier earnings in the tax year, salary-sacrifice arrangements, lease-car deductions, union subscriptions, childcare schemes, court orders or local payroll adjustments. It also cannot predict irregular night, weekend and bank-holiday enhancements. New starters may see emergency tax or part-month pay, while a backdated pay award can create a temporarily unusual payslip.

Use the result to compare working patterns and prepare a household budget, not as a guarantee of pay. Your NHS Wales employer’s payroll or workforce team can confirm contractual salary and deductions. HMRC can explain tax codes, NHS Pensions can clarify scheme contributions, and the Student Loans Company can confirm the plan held against your account.

Frequently asked questions

What is 30 hours as an NHS WTE?

Thirty hours divided by a standard 37.5-hour week is 0.8 WTE. Basic annual salary is therefore normally 80% of the full-time salary for the selected band and pay point.

What is 22.5 hours as an NHS WTE?

Twenty-two and a half hours is 0.6 WTE, or 60% of full-time hours. This is often three 7.5-hour days, although actual shift patterns can differ.

Can I use this as an NHS Band 5 part-time salary calculator?

Yes. Select Band 5, choose the correct entry, intermediate or top point and enter your contracted hours. The calculator also covers Bands 2 to 9 under NHS Wales Agenda for Change.

Does the calculator include weekend and night enhancements?

You can enter an average monthly amount, but it is treated as taxable and non-pensionable. Actual enhancement and pension treatment may differ, so compare several normal payslips when choosing an average.

Does annual leave reduce with part-time hours?

Part-time employees normally receive a pro-rata leave entitlement, but this salary tool does not calculate annual leave or bank-holiday entitlement. Those depend on contracted hours, service and local recording arrangements.

Is this an official NHS payroll calculator?

No. It is an independent planning tool based on published rates. Always use your contract, payslip and employer’s payroll team for definitive figures.
