What is NHS Wales unsocial-hours pay?

NHS unsocial-hours pay is an addition to basic pay for eligible Agenda for Change staff who work at particular times. In Wales, qualifying periods include weekday hours after 8pm and before 6am, all time on Saturdays, and all time on Sundays and public holidays. The percentage depends on the employee’s pay band and whether the hours fall into the weekday-night/Saturday category or the higher Sunday/public-holiday category.

This NHS Wales unsocial hours pay calculator converts a published annual salary into an approximate basic hourly rate, examines the shift minute by minute and applies the relevant enhancement. It is designed for nurses, healthcare support workers, administrative staff, allied health professionals, scientists and other employees paid under NHS Wales Agenda for Change terms. It does not cover medical and dental contracts, very senior managers or locally agreed arrangements outside the standard framework.

NHS Wales unsocial-hours rates by band

The enhancement is an addition to basic pay. “Time plus 30%,” for example, means the employee receives ordinary basic pay plus an extra 30% of the basic hourly rate for each qualifying hour. It does not mean that the entire payment is only 30% of normal pay.

Agenda for Change bandWeekday after 8pm/before 6am and SaturdaysSundays and public holidays
Band 1Time plus 50%Double time (100% enhancement)
Band 2Time plus 41%Time plus 83%
Band 3Time plus 35%Time plus 69%
Bands 4–9Time plus 30%Time plus 60%

The percentage itself does not increase when a new pay award is introduced, but the monetary value normally rises because it is applied to a higher basic hourly rate. This page uses the NHS Wales Agenda for Change salaries effective from 1 April 2026 following the 3.3% pay award.

How to use the NHS night and weekend pay calculator

Select the band and exact pay point shown on your contract, ESR record or payslip. Enter the date on which the shift begins, followed by its start and finish times. If the finish time is earlier than the start time, the calculator correctly treats the shift as crossing midnight. A shift beginning at 7pm and ending at 7am therefore lasts 12 hours before an unpaid break is removed.

If your break is unpaid, enter when it starts and select its length. The location of the break matters: a break between midnight and 1am on Sunday removes time from the Sunday category, whereas an early-evening break might remove ordinary hours. If your breaks are paid, choose “No unpaid break.”

Select the public-holiday option only when the calendar date on which the shift starts is a recognised holiday under your employer’s arrangements. A shift crossing into or out of a public holiday can require a more detailed payroll split than a single checkbox can reproduce. For that situation, calculate each calendar-day portion separately or ask payroll to confirm the correct allocation.

The repeated-shifts box multiplies the enhancement for one shift to provide a simple monthly extra-pay estimate. It assumes every repeated shift has the same day classification and times. It is useful for comparing regular rota patterns, but it is not a replacement for entering each actual shift when the dates vary.

How the Wales 50% whole-shift rule works

NHS Wales guidance is commonly described as the 50% or majority-of-the-shift rule. Where at least half of a qualifying shift falls in unsocial hours, the entire shift may attract an unsocial-hours rate. This is particularly relevant to weekday night shifts that begin before 8pm or finish after 6am. A 7pm-to-7am night shift has ten hours within the 8pm-to-6am window, so the rule can bring the remaining ordinary hours into the enhanced calculation.

With the rule selected, this calculator first identifies the paid minutes already falling in weekday-night, Saturday, Sunday or public-holiday periods. If those minutes make up at least half of the paid shift, any remaining ordinary minutes are assigned the lower weekday-night/Saturday enhancement. Hours already attracting a Sunday or public-holiday percentage retain the higher rate. Enhancement percentages are not stacked on the same minute.

Employers can operate retrospective or prospective systems and local implementation can affect how a roster is paid. Some documents describe the trigger as “more than half,” while operational systems may refer to “50% or more.” The calculator labels its assumption openly. If a shift sits exactly on the boundary, confirm the employer’s rule rather than relying on a few minutes’ difference.

Examples of NHS Wales night-shift pay

Consider a Band 5 employee on a weekday shift from 7pm to 7am with a 45-minute unpaid break at 1am. Most paid time falls between 8pm and 6am. Bands 4–9 receive a 30% enhancement for weekday nights, and the whole-shift option may apply the same percentage to the remaining paid hours. The calculator multiplies the basic hourly rate by the paid hours for basic shift pay, then calculates the 30% addition separately.

A Saturday daytime shift is simpler because all Saturday hours from midnight to midnight fall into the weekday-night/Saturday column. A Band 2 employee therefore receives an extra 41% of basic hourly pay for eligible paid Saturday hours. On Sunday the relevant Band 2 enhancement is 83%.

A shift crossing from Saturday night into Sunday must be divided. The Saturday minutes receive the applicable Saturday percentage and the Sunday minutes receive the higher Sunday percentage. This calculator performs that split automatically from the entered date and times. It applies only the highest rate relevant to each minute rather than adding a night percentage on top of a Sunday percentage.

How the basic hourly rate is estimated

The calculator derives an hourly figure from the selected full-time annual salary using 37.5 hours a week and 52.1429 weeks a year. This produces a practical estimate consistent with converting Agenda for Change annual basic pay into an hourly value. Payroll may retain more decimal places or use centrally supplied hourly figures, so a small rounding difference is possible.

Unsocial-hours enhancements are normally worked out using basic salary and may include an eligible long-term recruitment and retention premium. Short-term premiums and other additional payments are generally excluded from the calculation base. This calculator uses basic salary alone and does not provide an input for recruitment and retention premia.

Unsocial hours, overtime and bank work are different

Unsocial-hours pay applies to eligible hours within the relevant contractual arrangements. Overtime is payment for work beyond contracted hours and can follow different rates and rules. A staff-bank shift may also use an advertised local hourly rate rather than the employee’s substantive Agenda for Change salary. Do not assume that the percentage in this calculator must be added to every bank or overtime shift.

Where more than one provision could apply, the NHS terms and local payroll process determine which payment takes precedence. This calculator deliberately avoids stacking overtime, bank and unsocial-hours premiums because doing so could substantially overstate expected pay.

Will the enhancement equal the extra money in your bank?

No. The result is a gross-pay estimate before deductions. Unsocial-hours earnings can be subject to Income Tax, National Insurance, NHS pension contributions and student-loan deductions. The actual net increase depends on total pay in the payroll period, tax code, pension status and other deductions. It may therefore be noticeably lower than the gross enhancement shown.

Use this focused tool to check shift hours and gross enhancement. For a broader estimate of annual net earnings, use the NHS Wales salary calculator. If you work reduced contractual hours, the NHS Wales part-time salary calculator can estimate pro-rata basic and take-home pay once that page is published.

Why the amount on an NHS payslip may differ

Differences can arise from payroll rounding, a different recorded break, a prospective percentage paid each month, roster corrections, arrears, sickness or annual-leave calculations, a local agreement, or a shift being treated as overtime. Public-holiday boundaries and shifts crossing midnight deserve particular attention. Payslips may also show enhancements in a later month because of payroll cut-off dates.

Keep a record of the date, start and finish time, break, ward or department and roster approval for each disputed shift. Compare those details with the payslip line rather than comparing only the monthly total. Your line manager, roster administrator or NHS Wales payroll team can explain the method applied by your employer.

Important: this is an independent planning and payslip-checking tool. It does not create an entitlement or override the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Handbook, Welsh amendments, local agreements or payroll decisions.

Frequently asked questions

What hours count as unsocial on a weekday?

For the standard Agenda for Change table used here, weekday hours after 8pm and before 6am fall within the relevant unsocial period. A whole-shift rule may apply when at least half of a qualifying shift is unsocial.

Are all Saturday hours enhanced in NHS Wales?

Under the standard table, all Saturday time from midnight to midnight attracts the weekday-night/Saturday percentage for the employee’s band.

Are Sundays paid at double time?

Band 1 has double time under the table. Band 2 receives time plus 83%, Band 3 time plus 69%, and Bands 4–9 time plus 60% for Sunday and public-holiday hours.

Does a Sunday night receive both Sunday and night enhancements?

The calculator does not stack the percentages. It applies the higher Sunday/public-holiday rate to Sunday minutes and the appropriate rate after the calendar-day boundary.

Does an unpaid break receive an enhancement?

Normally an unpaid break is not paid and therefore does not generate basic or enhancement pay. Enter the break time so it is removed from the correct part of the shift.

Can Band 5 and Band 6 nurses use this calculator?

Yes, if they are paid under NHS Wales Agenda for Change and the standard Section 2 arrangements apply. Bands 4–9 use 30% for weekday nights/Saturdays and 60% for Sundays/public holidays.

Does this calculate tax and NHS pension deductions?

No. It shows gross basic shift pay and gross enhancement pay. Tax, National Insurance, pension and student-loan deductions depend on total earnings in the pay period.
